Juneteenth Flag Is More Than Just An Ordinary Flag
This year, Juneteenth was officially recognized as a public holiday after Joe Biden passed a resolution on it. Juneteenth has its own flag which is riddled with symbols and meaning. If you look closely, you will realize that the flag has a lot of meaning in it. For example, the colors of the Juneteenth flag are the same as the colors found in the American flag. It symbolizes that the Black Americans who were slaves at that time are also an equal part of America. Moreover, there is a curve that cuts through the center of the flag and divides it into the red and blue regions. It symbolizes a new horizon that brings renewed hope to the Black Americans.
What Does The Star On The Juneteenth Flag Represent
If you ever looked at the Juneteenth star, you will see a star in the middle of the flag. That star symbolizes the state of Texas. If you know the flag of Texas, you will see that it has a star called Lone Star in it. However, what is the significance of Texas in Juneteenth. In Galveston in 1865, Union soldiers informed the last remaining slaves about the beginning of their freedom and the end of their slavery.
What Does The Starburst Represent In The Juneteenth Flag
The Lone Star also represents the freedom of Black Americans in all 50 states of the US. The star outburst in the flag represents a nova or new star. It simply means a new beginning for the Black Americans in the US. Dean of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Barbara Krauthamer, Ph.D. opened up on the significance of Juneteenth. Moreover, she said, “Juneteenth gives people an opportunity to reflect on what it means to live in a country and in communities that say we value individual rights, we value freedom, we value freedom of the press and freedom of speech. And if we value that, we need to value that for everybody.”
