Although there is still a long way to go, tremendous progress has lately been made on the road to a truly diverse creative workforce in Hollywood. Just take a look at the career of Argentine film producer Victoria Alonso, who has worked behind the scenes on nearly all (!!!) of Marvel’s blockbuster superhero movies, including all of our Marvel favorites below.

A production company that is more self-aware creates entertainment that is more intriguing, real, and compelling! Baby, we’re in the golden age! To commemorate, we’re spotlighting the incredible films now available to stream on Disney+ that were created by Latina/Latino filmmakers.

1. Encanto

Bruno may not be the topic of conversation, but Jared Bush and Charise Castro Smith’s novel Encanto is. The wonderful Madrigal family, whose unique talents turn out to be both burdens and blessings, is first introduced to us in one of Disney’s most recent animated flicks. Strong examinations of family ties and generational pain are presented in Encanto.

2. Ferdinand

Ferdinand, a touching film adaptation of the same-titled children’s novel from the 1930s, was directed by Carlos Saldanha. Ferdinand is a lovely, flower-loving bull played by the charming John Cena. He prefers to enjoy life and smell carnations instead of engaging in combat in the arena. However, he is aware that the bulls, bullfighters, and the general public all have different ideas about what a bull should be. The entertaining children’s film Ferdinand features thrilling chase scenes and endearing characters, but it also offers a sobering examination of pacifism and what it means to be a strong person.

3. Guardians of the Galaxy

Laughably mismatched heroes get together to save the galaxy as the sexiest music plays in the background. Yes, go ahead! The film Guardians of the Galaxy is the ideal blend of crazy, thrilling, and humorous. The cast of the movie, which includes Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper, has the chemistry to maintain the momentum despite the blockbuster’s funky-retro style.

4. Coco

After accidentally entering the Land of the Dead while still living in the animated film Coco, 12-year-old Miguel makes an effort to return to his home in Mexico. Naturally, this arrangement encourages in-depth conversations about life and death, which Coco does a lovely job of unpacking. But just because something provokes contemplation doesn’t necessarily mean it lacks spirit. Adrian Molina’s imagination is awash in vibrant colors and upbeat music. What’s not to love about a charming and emotional movie?

5. Thor: Ragnarok

The best Thor film by far is Thor: Ragnarok. The superhero comedy stars Taika Waititi’s deft direction, a vibrant new planet, and a script that is so sharp it stings as the thunder god tries to speed home to battle his vengeful sister. Not to mention that Chris Hemsworth’s Thor is supported by a stellar cast that includes Tom Hiddleston and Mark Ruffalo from the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well as actors like Cate Blanchett, Jeff Goldblum, and Tessa Thompson.
