Singer Bappi Lahiri passes away

Singer Bappi Lahiri

Bappi Lahiri’s ‘Jimmy Jimmy, aaja aaja’, a classic disco tune from Mithun Chakravarty’s Disco Dancer, was a hit in Russia in the 1980s before the Soviet Union disintegrated in 1991. Lahiri’s version of disco, which featured sparkling bell-bottoms, hundreds of twinkling light bulbs, pelvic motions backed by synths, trumpets, rhythm guitars, and syncopated basslines, was heard and grooved to by the world’s largest country, which was starved of any ‘western’ popular culture.

Lahiri, 69, who popularised disco and had a string of hit songs in India during the 1970s and 1980s, died of obstructive sleep apnea on Tuesday in Mumbai. The singer had been in the hospital for about a month and had only recently come home. Bappa Lahiri, his son, and Rema Lahiri, his daughter, survive him.

Lahiri’s musical influences include his parents, Bengali vocalists Aparesh and Bansuri Lahiri, and his maternal uncle, actor and playback singer Kishore Kumar, whom he grew up listening to in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal. Lahiri arrived to Mumbai at the age of 19 after acquiring the foundations of classical music from his parents, including some tabla tuition, and began making music in an industry influenced by the melodies of RD Burman, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, and Kalyanji-Anandji, among others.

He may have started his career with Bengali film Daadu, but Nanha Shikari (1973), starring Deb Mukhrjee and Tanuja, was his Bollywood debut two years after he arrived in Mumbai. The film, directed by Tanuja’s husband Shomu Mukherjee, did not fare well at the box office. After several failed tries, Lahiri ultimately succeeded with three films in three years: Zakhmee (1975), Chalte Chalte (1976), and Aapki Khatir (1977). (1977).

While Lata Mangeshkar’s ‘Aao tumhe chand pe le jaayen’ (Zakhmee) was well-known, it was Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar’s ‘Jalta hai jiya mera’ that had the nation dancing. Then came ‘Kabhi alvida na kehna,’ the title song for Chalte Chalte, which became the farewell song for years to come, followed by the fun ‘Bambai se aaya mera dost,’ which was to become the farewell song for years to come.

Lahiri, on the other hand, had not yet reached the pinnacle of his commercial success. This happened in the 1980s. Apart from Disco Dancer (1982), there was Namak Halal (1982), Himmatwala (1983), and Sharaabi (1984). (1983). Lahiri and his unusual songs like ‘De de pyaar de’ and ‘Ke pag ghunghroo baandh’ are responsible for most of Amitabh Bachchan’s film success in the 1980s. These songs had distinct personalities that extended to the performers that played them. Then there was Lata Mangeshkar’s ‘Kaliyon ka chaman’ (Jyoti, 1981), which became more renowned as a remix in the 2000s. Ghazals, a prominent form in India throughout the 1980s, were also part of Lahiri’s repertoire. His composition ‘Kisi nazar ko’ (Aitbaar, 1985) is still regarded as one of the best film ghazals ever written. Lahiri also enjoyed singing and performed frequently for himself and other composers. Apart from ‘Ooh la la’ (The Dirty Picture) and ‘Bambai nagariya’ (Taxi no 9211), both composed by composer team Vishal-Shekhar, ‘Yaar bina chain’ (Saaheb) remains one of his most popular songs.

While the 1980s aren’t widely regarded as the best years for Hindi film music, Lahiri’s songs had a huge impact, making him a disco pioneer in India. In 2012, he became the first Indian composer to be invited to the Grammy Jury, and he briefly entered politics. In 2014, he joined the BJP and ran for Lok Sabha, but lost. However, Lahiri will be remembered as the musician who popularised disco and drove its popularity.

India’s nightingale, Lata Mangeshkar, no more

Lata Mangeshkar

When asked about his inspiration for making music, famed composer S.D. Burman is said to have said, “Give me a harmonium, give me Lata (Mangeshkar), and I will make music.”” Lata Mangeshkar, muse to some of India’s best composers, recipient of the country’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, and the epitome of Indian femininity on the silver screen for over 50 years, died on Sunday after a long illness that included covid problems.

Mangeshkar was born in Indore in 1929 to Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar, a Marathi classical singer and theatre actor, and his Gujarati wife Shevanti. Her voice has been described as ‘virginally pure,’ and her playback for an actress symbolic of the latter having made it in Bollywood, particularly during the 1960s and 1970s when the singer was at her peak. Mangeshkar began her career at the age of 13 after her father died, singing for a Marathi film called Kiti Hasal.

She has three sisters, Meena, Asha, and Usha, and a brother, Hridaynath, who are all outstanding singers and musicians (1942). Her migration to Mumbai in 1945 was followed by modest roles in a few films till Aayega Aanewala, based on Madhubala in Mahal, gave her the major break (1949).

Mangeshkar has the unique distinction of singing for around seven generations of female actors, having worked with composers as diverse as Anil Biswas, Shankar Jaikishan, Naushad Ali, S.D. Burman, C. Ramchandra, Hemant Kumar, Salil Chowdhury, Khayyam, Ravi, Sajjad Hussain, Roshan, Kalyanji-Anandji, Madan Mohan, and Usha Khanna over the (Madhubala and Nimmi in the 1940s, Meena Kumari , Nargis and Nutan in the 50s, Waheeda Rehman, Asha Parekh and Sharmila Tagore in the 60s, Mumtaz, Hema Malini , Jaya Bhaduri and Zeenat Aman in the 70s, Sridevi and Rekha in the 80s, Juhi Chawla, Karisma Kapoor and Manisha Koirala in the 90s and Preity Zinta and Kareena Kapoor in the 2000s).

Mangeshkar was well-known for her stranglehold over the film music industry during those years, along with sister Asha, who was recognised for more sensual songs than the older sister’s plain chastity. Despite doctors’ warnings that she would not be able to sing again, composers such as Hemant Kumar and Madan Mohan waited for the vocalist to recuperate from her sickness and sing for their films Bees Saal Baad (1962) and WohKaun Thi (1964). Mangeshkerian milestones include Kahin Deep Jale Kahin Dil in Bees Saal Baad and Naina Barse in WohKaun Thi, which follow the ‘never-again’ prophecy. Indeed, during those years, Mangeshkar provided a unique stature and notoriety to singers and musicians who had not before been acknowledged as stars in India, boosted by the rise and popularity of radio.

Mangeshkar, who has recorded songs in over a thousand Hindi films across thirty-six regional Indian languages and foreign languages, primarily in Marathi, Hindi, and Bengali, is widely respected in the Indian film industry and affectionately called ‘Didi’ (elder sister) by all. Her signature white sari-clad figure and her songs notching up views and streams endlessly across streaming platforms for newer generations to discover her remain an enduring memory thanks to her signature white sari She’s also produced four films, including Gulzar’s Lekin, and provided music for a few of Marathi films (1991).

Her extensive charity effort includes the establishment of a hospital in Pune named after her father, Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital and Research Centre.
Mangeshkar, who remained unmarried, is survived by a huge family, including her brothers and their children, as well as a legion of followers around the world who would today swear by the words written for her by poet and music director Naushad, “The very heart of India throbs in your voice.”

Lata Mangeshkar showing Positive Signs of Improvement

Lata Mangehskar Health Condition

According to her spokeswoman, Lata Mangeshkar is exhibiting ‘good signs of improvement,’ citing Dr Pratit Samdani of Breach Candy Hospital. The 92-year-old singer was hospitalised to the Breach Candy Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on January 8 after testing positive for coronavirus with mild symptoms.

On Saturday, Lata’s Twitter account sent the following message: “A heartfelt appeal to put an end to the unsettling conjecture. Breach Candy Hospital’s Dr Pratit Samdani has provided an update. Lata Didi is doing better than she was before and is being treated in the intensive care unit. We hope and pray for her quick recovery and return home.”

Anusha Srinivasan Iyer, a close friend of the family, had told news agency PTI that the veteran singer is doing well. “Lata Didi is showing signs of improvement and is receiving care in the ICU from an incredible team of doctors led by Dr Pratit Samdani. We are hoping and praying for her to recover quickly and return home “In a statement, Iyer added.

On Friday, social media began to spread rumours that Mangeshkar’s health had deteriorated. Anusha had shot down the rumours, telling PTI, “A heartfelt request. Please do not spread any misleading information… Both the family and the doctors require privacy. Let us all pray that Lata Didi recovers quickly and returns home.”

Lata Mangeshkar, regarded as one of India’s best vocalists, began her career at the age of 13 in 1942 and has over 30,000 songs to her credit in a variety of Indian languages.

She has sung several unforgettable songs throughout her distinguished career, including Ajeeb Dastan Hai Ye, Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya, Neela Asman So Gaya, and Tere Liye, to name a few.

Numerous medals and honours have been bestowed to the singer, including the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, and Dada Saheb Phalke Award, as well as multiple National Film Awards. She has also been awarded India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna.

Netflix’s Lack of Success in India ‘frustrating’, Cofounder Reed Hastings Says

Netflix India (1)

In an investor call on Thursday, Netflix co-founder, president, and co-CEO Reed Hastings stated that the firm’s lack of success in India is “frustrating,” but that the company is “absolutely pushing in there.”

The global streaming giant, based in Los Gatos, California, saw its stock plummet after announcing that it expects to add only 2.5 million new news subscribers in the current quarter, the lowest for the first quarter in nearly a decade, added 2.6 million new paying subscribers in the Asia Pacific region in the last quarter (up from 2 million in the same quarter last fiscal), with strong growth in both Japan and India.

While Netflix has never disclosed the number of Indian members, market estimates place the figure between 4.3 million and 4.5 million, a fraction of rivals Disney+Hotstar (almost 36 million) and Amazon Prime Video (nearly 4.5 million) (over 17 million).

Netflix cut its prices in India in December to make the service more accessible to a larger range of customers. However, many experts feel that the move will only increase the number of users who were already using the service due to account sharing.

Netflix’s chief operational and product officer, Greg Peters, said during the webcast on Thursday that the price shift is the result of a series of actions the firm has been conducting in India over the years. “We’ve been operating there and learning more about Indian consumers’ tastes, et cetera,” Peters explained, “and that’s widening the service offering across many, many different dimensions.” “We decided it was the perfect time to lower our prices there, to make it more accessible to everyone… we’re looking at it from the perspective of long-term revenue maximization.”

While Netflix expects a reduction in average income per member as a result of the price cuts, Peters believes the company will make up for it by adding more subscribers.

“I believe it is still too early to consider India. And it takes a couple of months to get a pretty clean read on some of these impacts, such as retention,” he said. “However, the early data we’re seeing strongly suggests that the lens of revenue maximization through these modifications is a positive read.”

Hastings previously stated that India’s pay-TV pricing, which is roughly $3 per month per household, is unusual. “Rarely different pricing from the rest of the globe,” he continued, “which has an impact on consumer expectations.”

When asked if Netflix will consider right-sizing content spend or switching to an ad-supported model, he indicated it will be a long time before the firm makes any significant changes to its business model.

“For the first couple of years in Brazil, we found it to be really difficult. We feared we’d never make a profit. I know we’ve got a terrific company… The good news is that we’ve got the flywheel turning in every other significant market. Why haven’t we been as successful in India is something that annoys us, but we’re definitely leaning in there “According to Hastings.

After two years, Netflix, the first global OTT provider to launch in India in 2016, began to establish staff and invest in original content.

Hastings announced in 2018 that the firm would spend Rs 2,000 crore on content in India over the next two years, more than the combined programming budgets of the top four Hindi general entertainment networks.

Many of the series and films, on the other hand, have yet to draw huge audiences.

Netflix’s strategy and approach of “throwing money at every problem,” according to experts, is to blame.

“One of the most serious challenges with Netflix in India is that it is unclear which market they are targeting. Is paying Rs 85 crore for a ‘Sooryavanshi’ reasonable? “They’ve always had a thing for Bollywood, and the regional plan is too little, too late,” a top executive at a competitor service said.

According to a senior executive who left Netflix last year, the brand is very strong, but they need to figure out if they want to focus on keeping and growing engagement from existing users or on attracting new subscribers.

“It’s only the first in India,” he explained. “Also, when I worked at Netflix, it looked like we had all forgotten about the return on investment (return on investments). We were all given an unlimited budget to spend on content, marketing, and PR, among other things. There was no dispute about who was responsible “he stated

Netflix Group CFO Spencer Neumann noted on the investor call that while the company has a “terrific business” and a “terrific business model” that scales effectively, it is also extremely difficult in every country.

“Every country has a different adoption curve, and we talk about product-market fit, but even if everyone enjoys movies, television, and games, it’s a really specialized situation. Around the world, entertainment is still largely regional. So it’s both global and local, and we have to figure out which is which “In response to a question on India, he stated.

Who will be the Next James Bond?

Next James Bond

After acting in five successful James Bond films over the previous 16 years, actor Daniel Craig has said his goodbyes to the legendary British spy character. Craig’s final Bond picture, No Time to Die, was released later this year. Craig has, without a doubt, earned the hearts of millions of followers through bonds. But the most pressing concern on moviegoers’ minds since his departure is, “Who will be the next James Bond?”

A lot will be determined by who will play James Bond on the big screen after Craig. First and foremost, box office success; second, finding someone who can act as well as Craig. It’s tough to say whether the new James Bond will win fans’ hearts.

According to the BBC, Mark O’Connell, author of “Catching Bullets: Memoirs of a Bond Fan,” believes the new James Bond will pay homage to his predecessors while also having his own personality and qualities.

Today’s event with those potential stars will reveal who could be the next James Bond Zero Zero Seven.

Tom Hardy

One thing is certain: the next James Bond will be a completely different guy. And producer Barbara Broccoli has stated unequivocally that the next James Bond must be a guy! As a result, female actors have been removed from the list.

When it came to masculine characters, Tom Hardy’s duo was a perfect complement. Tom has previously demonstrated his masculinity in films like Venom, Dunkirk, and Mad Max: Fury Road.

“I’m genuinely interested in starring in a Bond movie directed by Christopher Nolan or someone like him,” Tom said in a 2012 interview.

Tom, though, at the age of 44, may have missed out on that chance. It would be as if an 80-year-old guy were playing the role of a detective if he, like Craig, had been in bondage for 15 years!

Reg-Gene Page

Reg-Jean Page, the star of Bridgeton, is no longer concerned about his age. As a result, we can only imagine him as a young James Bond.

Pierce Brosnan, the former Zero Zero Seven actor, also voted in favour of the page! Bond appears to be auditioning for the part on the red carpets of all the previous shows.

Page, on the other hand, disagrees. “When individuals emulate someone they know in the UK, they think of the letter ‘B.'” It’s similar to a merit badge. And I’d be delighted to receive that badge,” he stated.

Richard Madden

Shawn Connery, the late Scottish actor, made his cinematic debut as James Bond. So it’s not unreasonable to expect the producers to bring in more Scottish talent.

As a result, Game of Thrones star Richard Madden could fall into the actor’s trip to play James Bond. He also gave Bond a breath of fresh air by donning a new tuxedo, reversing the automobile, and firing the gun.

However, the actor, like Reg-Jean Page, has debunked these accusations. In this connection, he stated in 2016 that it takes more than flattery to make someone believe he is James Bond! He did admit, though, that their numbers were insufficient to overthrow Trump’s regime.

Tom Hopper

The problem with casting a Bond actor is that the names are at the top of the list of favourites; in fact, they are the bookies’ favourites. However, the producers chose someone who is unsuitable.

“No bookie named Daniel Craig following Pierce Brosnan’s death, or two years afterwards, since they were busy with Clive Owen,” writes O’Connell. It was because he was dressed up in a tuxedo in another photo! On a Sunday night, James Bond would never be spotted outside.”

In late October, there were also rumours that producer Broccoli had named Hopper in his shortlist.

Henry Cavill

Many people are unfamiliar with the name of the ‘Superman’ actor who worked alongside Daniel Craig. Because he is so young, theories regarding his Bond persona are spreading. So he’s on the list this time.

“Everything is flying in the air now,” Cavill told GQ in 2020. Let’s see how things go. But, yeah, I’d like to play James Bond. It’ll be a thrilling experience!”

Are the book’s writers included in the list?

James Bond is “a new Bond, not just walking the red carpet,” according to O’Connell, who has authored a book about the James Bond films. He has to be a movie star, a series and film ambassador, a media diplomat, and a man of British culture.” And to be a goodwill ambassador for products and endorsements worth billions of dollars.

According to him, James Bond will be a name that people all over the world will recognise at a look. At the same time, she must be gorgeous in order to elicit obsession and capture the audience’s attention on the big screen.
