Google, in cooperation with Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, announced the commencement of its first India-focused Newsroom Leadership programme on Monday. In a blog post, the internet giant stated that the six-month programme, which will be delivered remotely in this edition, intends to improve the leadership abilities and quick decision-making capacity of newsroom leaders working and living in India.
Applied technology, audience knowledge, design thinking, data applications, evolving business models, and editorial innovation will all be highlighted. In a blog post, Surabhi Malik, programme director at Google News Initiative India Training Network, said, “We look forward to working closely with the news industry and continuing to encourage authoritative, high-quality journalism in India.”
She went on to say that the attendees will get the skills and information they need to make better strategic decisions for their newsrooms and viewers.
The Asia Pacific-wide programme, which began in August 2019, aims to assist journalists in learning digital tools that can improve great storytelling, advocating for socially conscious reporting, and investigating new approaches to political polling, as well as exploring new membership and revenue models for news, in order to help fund the future of journalism in their respective countries.
“By 2021, the landscape for news, as well as businesses across the board, will have changed. “Building successful news companies for the digital age is now a top issue in newsrooms all over the world, with local realities like a country’s linguistic diversity adding layers that necessitate localised approaches,” Malik said.
Successful applicants – mid-career newsroom leaders working full-time in editorial positions at Indian news organisations — will receive the training free of charge. The program’s application window runs from April through August and expires on February 15, 2022.
