Pfizer and BioNTech, two pharmaceutical companies, released a statement on Saturday claiming that they are unsure whether their vaccines will be able to aid with the treatment of the new COVID-19 variant Omicron. According to Sputnik, the businesses reportedly promised to develop a new vaccination against the variation in around 100 days.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has revealed the discovery of a new COVID-19 strain, the B.1.1.529, which was first discovered in southern Africa. The variation was given the Greek letter Omicron by WHO.
“In the event that a vaccine-escape variant occurs, Pfizer and BioNTech anticipate to be able to design and produce a tailored vaccination against that variant in roughly 100 days, subject to regulatory approval,” they said.
According to Sputnik, Pfizer and BioNTech said in a statement that they expect further data on Omicron within the next two weeks and that the variant differs dramatically from previously seen ones.
The pharmaceutical companies emphasized that they began working on adapting their vaccination to new probable varieties months ago and that their vaccine can now adjust itself in six weeks and ship initial batches in 100 days, according to the statement.
In a related incident, the World Trade Organization (WTO) on Saturday postponed the 12th Ministerial Conference (MC12), which was scheduled to take place in Geneva, due to the spread of the Omicron variant.
As a preventive move to prevent the spread of the new variety, India added many nations to the list of countries from which visitors will be required to take additional steps upon arrival in India, including post-arrival infection testing. According to News Media, the United States, the European Union, and other key destinations have taken steps to prohibit flights from numerous African countries.
