Babies and young children like to play in the water. Many parents take their kids to swimming pools these days to have fun and teach them how to swim. But children’s safety should never be overlooked, whether they’re playing around the pool or swimming in it. Parents need to know what to watch out for to keep their kids safe. A child’s life can be in danger in a single moment of carelessness. Let’s look at the rules for keeping kids, especially babies and toddlers, safe in swimming pools.

Safety Tips for Parents of Babies and Toddlers at Swimming Pools

Check Body-temperature of the Child

You should always take a few seconds to feel the water’s temperature before letting your child in. The best temperature range for water is from 85 to 87 degrees Fahrenheit. Most of the time, this is true.

You should never put your baby in a pool that is either too cold or too hot. This is especially true if the temperature of the water is constantly changing. This can make your baby’s temperature go up or down quickly, which can lead to either hypothermia or a fever.

Check the Chemicals in the Pool Water

Before you and your child get in the pool together, the levels of chemicals like cyanuric acid should be checked and changed as needed. Anything that has more than 90 ppm of acid is bad for you.

If the overall chemical levels in your pool are too low, germs and algae are likely to grow there. This is also bad for your baby’s health and could cause them a number of problems. When the amount of chemicals in the pool as a whole is too high, it can irritate the skin of both babies and adults, which can be painful.

Saltwater pools are less likely to cause skin irritation and other health problems in babies and young children because they have fewer chemicals.

Use Floatabale Objects

You and your baby can have a fun, happy, and easy time in the water of a swimming pool. Flotation aids are safe to use. A baby can move while sitting on a floatation device. It makes the baby feel like he or she has no weight. So, doing fun things like floating in the pool water can make a baby or toddler feel happy, which is good for its mental and physical health.

Be Conscious of Sunscreen

Sunscreen is good for kids, but did you know you shouldn’t put it on the skin of a baby younger than six months? When compared to an adult, a baby’s skin has a much larger surface area for its weight. Because of this, children are also more likely to absorb the chemicals in sunscreen.

If you want to take your baby into the pool, try to do it early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the sun isn’t as strong. This will make it less likely that you’ll get a sunburn. Instead of putting on sunscreen, you could have your baby wear a wide-brimmed hat while they float in the pool. You can look for UV-resistant swimsuits for your toddler.

Use Swim Diapers

Use swim diapers when you go swimming with your baby. This is another important tip. You know that babies can’t yet control when they need to go to the bathroom or empty their bladders.

If you have any reason to think that your child might have put harmful bacteria into the pool, you must get everyone out of the water right away. Then, the amount of chlorine in the pool should be raised. This way, the pool cleans itself of any dirt or other debris.

Put Your Phones Away

This is something that lifeguards see all the time. When the parents get to the pool, they tell their kids to stay in the shallow end and then check their phones. Children who are left alone are eventually taken care of by swimmers or other adults.

But young children, especially babies, and toddlers could quietly drown and die in the time it takes to post a photo to Instagram. You don’t have to leave your cell phone at home. In case of an emergency, you should keep it charged and close by.

Study CPR

When an adult or a baby drowns in the pool, their heart may stop beating all of a sudden. Instead of waiting for an ambulance or medical help, having basic knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can make the difference between life and death. If you take your kids to the pool often, it is safer if you know how to do CPR.

Employ a Water Monitor

Don’t forget that drowning is a quick and quiet way to die. Most of the time, people drown without struggling, splashing, or making any other noises. It can happen in less than a minute. Don’t count on being able to hear a drowning to stop it.

People often drown when there are a lot of people around and everyone thinks that someone else is watching the kids. During a pool party with young children, especially babies and toddlers, choose one or more people to be “water monitors.” They should always keep an eye on the kids they are watching.

Buy a Life Jacket

Many parents buy their kids water wings or other toys that float, like rafts. These things might not always keep kids from drowning, and they might give parents a false sense of security.

Kids should always wear a standard life jacket that fits them well when they are near large swimming pools or natural bodies of water like a lake or river. But keep in mind that just because your child is wearing a life jacket, you can’t forget about their safety.

Make the Pool More Secured

You can use a kiddie pool or something else that can hold enough water to be safe. You can also put up a four-foot-tall fence around the pool that locks itself shut. The fence should be solid and keep the pool separate from both the house and the yard.

Safety is just as important as fun for your child in the swimming pool. Most kids who drown are between the ages of one and nine. Even though teaching your child to swim won’t keep them from getting hurt, it can add an extra layer of safety. So far, we’ve talked about 10 safety rules for babies in swimming pools. With these tips, the chance of drowning and other accidents will go down.
