If you’ve been watching Netflix in the last few days, you’ve probably noticed El Novato, one of their new shows, progressively move into the top ten most popular, and if you haven’t already, you should. This is one of his likely sleeper hits that did not receive as much advertising but was well received by the audience, enhancing his popularity through comments on social media.

El Novato (The Recruit) stars Noah Centineo, who you might recognize from his role as Atom Smasher in Black Adam, and was written by Alexi Hawkley, who has previously delivered praised works such as Castle and The Rookie, with Nathan Fillion as the main character. We tell you more about this show and why you should watch it.

What exactly is The Rookie about?

The Rookie features Owen Hendricks (Noah Centineo), a CIA lawyer who becomes engaged in an international war after speaking with a lady who is requesting that the agency exonerate her after attempting to disclose her relationship with it. Hendricks attempts to negotiate with her, but he is also threatened by several factions while attempting to settle the situation through legal procedures. Centineo transforms from a regular lawyer to an action hero in a Jack Ryan-esque twist.

However, the series is not only a political action thriller, but it also has lots of comedic elements thanks to Centineo’s charisma, which keeps us linked to the character, his frustrations, and the absurdity of his situation. Just making the list, it might be one of the best Netflix programs of the year.

The series has been favorably received by critics with a 70% approval rating on RottenTomatoes, where the consensus notes: ” The Rookie might not be the most creative production, but it leverages Noah Centineo ‘s immense charms that make it worth watching.

The fascinating thing is that, while other Netflix series are heavily promoted, this one was overlooked as an extra release for December; yet, it appears that audiences are loving the work as it climbs the popularity list in several nations, including Mexico.

Laura Haddock (White Lines) co-stars as the lady working with the CIA, along with Aarti Mann (Heroes), Colton Dunn (Superstore), Fivel Stewart (The Recruit), and Kristian Brunn (Orphan Black).

The first season comprises eight episodes ranging in length from 50 to 58 minutes, resulting in what appears to be more of a mini-series, raising the question of whether a second season would be produced.
