What should you put on a resume? It’s an important question for job seekers who don’t want to be wrong. Even though we think it’s easy to make a CV, it takes a bit of work to make a document that can help us get into different places.
Many people think that a photo should be included on a resume, but it’s not although it may depend on the profession. You do need a few key facts and basic information about yourself, though and avoid some things that could cost you your job. Here, we’ll tell you the things you should never forget.
Name and contact details
Even though it seems obvious, there are cases where people forget to put their name, put it wrong, or forget to put their contact information so that they are easy to find if they need to. This can happen because they think the company is already in touch with them. However, resumes can move around and end up in the hands of someone else. If that person can’t find you, it will definitely be a problem and you will miss out on opportunities.
Many people forget or overlook putting a short description and/or career objective on their CVs. This is an effective way to introduce your “professional self” by talking about your interests and passions in your field and what you want to do with your career. What do you want to get out of life in general? This will not only help the employer see who they can hire, but it will also help you be clearer when asked what you are looking for or how you want to grow in a new company.
Work experience in detail
It is common to list the place of work, the dates you worked there, and the tasks you did there. However, this can be very shallow. Try to think a little more deeply about each skill you’ve learned, especially those that are more important to your career goals or that you want to stand out in certain jobs. Don’t forget that you can have different CVs and tailor each one to a different job.
Education and Certifications
This is now a more important point. You might think that education isn’t as important for some people, but it is, and it’s also a part of your CV where you can list workshops, courses, and other types of training you’ve had even after you graduated from college. This is becoming more appealing to employers who want to hire people who are always learning new things, which shows more about their initiative and professional interest.
Skills and attributes
A skill that can get you a job isn’t just the ability to do a specific task. It can also include things like leadership and planning skills, as well as other skills that may not have been needed in your last job but are worth mentioning in case they could be useful in the future or help to show what kind of professional you are.
We suggest writing down between six and ten of your best traits. Think of the things you are good at and write them down in a short list.
In general, it’s important that you say what you want to say quickly, that you don’t talk about yourself (use the third person instead, and don’t say your name), and that you have a good presentation. That will be enough for them to see it at least twice. What you do next is up to you.
